    Hi guys,
I'm starting a new job soon that requires me to be able to speak/read/write Japanese relatively fluently.
Just wondering if anyone knows any good private language schools that I can enrol in pretty much straight away..

I know I can take the uni route, but most unis only have 3 year degrees with Japanese majors, and I'm looking to fasttrack my learning to within a year or less.
The best option so far I have found is TAFE, which has a 8 week short course starting on the 20th, with a longer certificate course starting next Feb.

    Any suggestions?

Hey dt. As with any language learning, learning Japanese is not something you can hope to achieve overnight. You’ll need a long-term dedicated commitment to get good results, and it’s hard to fast track in any way other than putting in the hours.

However, I would suggest working out what your biggest priorities are in terms of speaking/reading/writing and begin by focussing on them. Achieving conversational fluency is what many people aim for initially, but you can spread your learning according to what you feel is most important. Sign up for Tafe, sign up to some conversational groups (I’ll see if I can track down some info for you on these) and make use of on-line resources (Mango is pretty great, Slime Forest is good for kanji and there’s more Japanese fluency ideas here)

There’s also the option of supplementing with private language classes, and I’m sure one of the other guys will provide more info on these.

Will you be looking at travelling to Japan as part of your job, or will it mostly be based in Perth?

For beginners, a school associated with LovingPerth offers 1-on-1 Japanese classes, or in small groups if preferable and manageable. It’s based in North Perth and the teacher has the relevant accreditation from Japan.

I’ve heard good and bad things about TAFE. Certainly the private route is better if you have an idea of exactly what you are aiming for.

Do you have any experience in Japanese? If so, I’m sure you already know, but if not, to be blunt, you have no chance of being literate in reading/writing without a lot of time and effort. Speaking is another question. While it’s no walk in the park, it is a bit easier. Having said that, the best way to learn spoken Japanese is to have a grasp of the written language.

Let us know here if you’re interested in any more info. Apart from our affiliate school, there are a number of other small private tutors in Perth. Good luck! Can I ask in what field the job is?

Thanks very much for the info guys..

I know it is always difficult to learn a new language (i tried Mandarin in high school and failed miserably), but I guess im in a more favourable position since I just came back from a holiday in Tokyo and have a goal of someday working over there. I was planning to learn Japanese anyway, but then this job opportunity came about so i'm really looking forward to it.

I don't have much info except the company is a Japanese mining company who just started operations in Perth. I'm contracted to work in their IT services. That's about all I know, but I guess the first step is to be able to be conversationally competent first.

So if that is my initial goal, would you guys recommend I sign up for the Tafe classes or the private school? Or even a mix of both?
Either way, I will look for a private tutor in addition to the course.

Johnny would you have details of that school? Is it K & K by any chance?

    Thanks again.

I’m pretty sure TAFE has a conversational course. Our school isn’t K&K; it’s called intoJapanese and is just getting off the ground. We have a few students but no web page or flyer yet! Shouldn’t be too long, hopefully.
